Star Wars Parts Recycled

date posted: Jan 10, 2006 6:20 PM edit

Here are just three examples of the Star Wars recycling program. I know there are more out there but If you know of more please present what you have and we'll add them to the site!

Eerie Similarities
The first set of photos shows Luke Skywalker at the Mos Eisley Spaceport Cantina, after he's asked Wuher for a refreshing drink and is just starting to get harassed by Dr. Evazan. Recognize the head of a certain bounty hunter from ESB?

The second set of photos is of the short order fry cook from the Droids TV series (episode: Pirates of Tarnooga). Dex sure does look familiar.

The third, while not Star Wars recycling per se is a reverse reference comparison, shows Flo the waitress (on the far left) from Mel's Diner in the TV show Alice (1976).
And the shot on the right of Flo the droid waitress (Mel's Flo's namesake ) from Dex's Diner in Attack of the Clones. Notice also here that Mel (Vic Tayback) looks like the model for both cooks from Star Wars.
You may think momentarily that the show Alice was influenced by American Graffiti somehow but it was actually based on the Martin Scorcese film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) which was based on a screenplay by Robert Getchell.

The fourth set of photos shows the cycle wheel used by a character in the Droids TV series (also episode: Pirates of Tarnooga) and the subsequent re-use of the vehicle by that coughing, sinister character from ROTS. One of those vehicles you always wanted to see fleshed out in 3D form as a kid only to marvel at it in ROTS.

Again, I know there are many other examples out there, let me know! Let's see what else is in the recycle bin!

I had heard about the wheel bike, but never seen a decent resolution picture of it, thanks

We could atribute Dex just as much to the 4 armed cross-dressing cook in the Star Wars Holiday special sort of, couldn't we? (Unless the cook in Droids had a personality similar to Dex)

And the IG-88 supposed re-use is news to me.

Great blob!

I never heard of any of those before.
This is a little different but in ESB when Vader is arriving on the super star destroyer after the fight with Luke, the shot of him stepping off the ship was actually a scene from ROTJ of him arriving on the Second Death Star. The scene was added later in the Special Addition.

Sure thing.

"We could attribute Dex just as much to the 4 armed cross-dressing cook in the Star Wars Holiday"
hahaha!! I suppose we could.

Hm, that's interesting.
Thank you.

If you also take a look in ANH, outside the Millenium Falcon when Jabba leaves, the also familiar bounty hunter appears just as the scene wipes out. You know, the Maladorian?

That was really neat. I was forced to watch the droid thing with my younger sister (that thing goes on forever! ) but I never made the dex or the wheelbike connection.

Loved that they put our fav Mandalorian there! That's a pretty good example though more along the lines of continuity rather than recycling. Thanks IANR25!

I'm thinking along the lines of the other examples. Things that don't jump out right away or don't look like they're meant to be there but have some interesting/odd yet seemingly unrelated placement...as in the case of the Cantina bar piece that was used as IG88's head in ESB.

lol, yes Charlette, I too felt as if it lasted forever as my son watched it over and over and over, etc. (he's 3) but when I had to look for character pics for the site I took more notice, that's when I found it. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention before.

Go to Google, type in "Emperor/Pope", and do a picture search.

Good spot, especially IG-88. Always caught my eye but never put the two together.
Thye wheel bike struck me the first time I saw a promo photo of it, partly because I was a big Droids fan back when it was on and also because I have recently got the whole series on VHS through ebay, so had not long since watched them.
And Dex too, I remembered the 4 armed cook.
Great piece mate. 4 days to go!

Good morning!
My memory was only tapped by ROTS, I just didn't place where I'd seen it before. The pics have been sitting a while. I'd totally forgotten about them.

4 days!
