Davenport, Claire

Claire Davenport

Claire Bernice Davenport was born to Leslie Stuart Davenport (an Insurance Brokers Clerk) and Hilda madeline Davenport (neƩ Goodyear) on April 24, 1933 in Sale, Cheshire, England, UK.

Davenport dreamed of being an actress from the time she was a young girl, she attended Lymme Grammar School, then trained as and became a secondary modern school teacher at St. Catherine's College in Liverpool, her first teaching role outside of St. Catherine's was at St. Cyprians in Salford.
From the years 1958 - 1960 Miss Davenport was a teacher at West Liverpool Street Junior School in Salford, Lancashire, UK.
Davenport spent her evenings outside of teaching to pursue acting at The Garrick Playhouse. She left teaching and enrolled at RADA in 1960 and before she could finish her studies she got her first role in The Rag Trade, a stage production based on the TV series.

From Fawlty Towers: Fully Booked: "Davenport was a larger than life character actress who worked with the great and the good of British Comedy.  Claire Davenport was a perfect vehicle for humour based on innuendo, farce and sometimes downright smut."

After several strokes in the mid-90s, Davenport died on March 4, 2002 of renal failure at Hammersmith Hospital.  She was never married, and was survived by her brother.
